Songs so good they were ridiculous

16 posts in this topic

Over the years, I catch a song or too that catches my eye as being extremely good regardless of their placement on the charts.  One that I recalled was Soul II Soul: Back To LIfe.  I remember saying to myself.  "Self.  This song is so good, it is ridiculous.  What are songs you would put in this special category?"

The Five Stairsteps were a more sophisticated than The Jackson 5. Their most popular hit was "Ooh Child", but I preferred their early work. Their father was a detective for the Chicago Police Department. You can hear the discipline.

Stairstep Keni Burke went on as a session bassist for Sly & the Family Stone, Natalie Cole, Billy Preston, Les McCann, The Emotions, Raffi, The Four Tops, Redman, Terry Callier, Stargard, Curtis Mayfield, Bill Withers, Linda Clifford, Silk, Narada Michael Walden, Ramsey Lewis, Dusty Springfield, Diana Ross and Gladys Knight.

Keni Burke also worked as a writer/producer (frequently with keyboardist Dean Gant and former Average White Band drummer Steve Ferrone) with The O'Jays, The Jones Girls, The Whispers, Keith Sweat, George Howard, Peabo Bryson, and Bill Withers among others. He co-produced Withers' album, Menagerie, which included the hit single "Lovely Day."

All time great song, transcends all genres. Wry humor, edgy topic, good beat you can dance to, and it has howling!

"Little old lady got mutilated late last night" one of the great rock 'n roll tongue twisters.

An excellent song.  I also like "Nighttime in the Switching Yard" as well.

Lou Reed. Intro: Sweet Jane. Best lead in to a song ever.
