Spring Training Fun

You can't really judge their stats, but I saw Bud Norris in person early in ST in 2015 and I knew right off he was done, at least in Baltimore.

Ubaldo could be slacking on his mechanics again -- could be time to pull him aside for another session. Hopefully McDowell and Co. (Brady) can have the same success as Wallace did.

Hopefully McDowell can have a positive affect on UJ. But I wouldn't call UJ's results with Wallace "success". He's been a bust under Wallace's instruction. I'm not blaming Wallace for that, I just don't think UJ can be fixed. Those mechanics can not be consistently replicated.

Pitchers: I don't know if I would cut the guys you mentioned. I would reassign them to the minors. The reason being, the O's system has absolutely no arms to bring up, in an emergency. Those guys, for as terrible as they are, still represent the best the system has to offer.

Infielders: I would keep Janish in Norfolk, cut the others you mentioned. As far as I know, the system has no back up for Hardy, when he eventually hits the DL again. Flaherty is a slightly better bat, but Janish's defense is so superior to RF, that I'd rather see the glove save runs from being scored, than to see RF not hit, and also not cover SS as well.

Outfieders: Santander is the one that's injured, not Tavarez (unless Tavarez is also injured). I would move Alvarez to Norfolk, then wait for him to opt out, and I'd keep Gentry. He's less reliable with the bat, but he's had a great ST, and has the potential to make a comeback. Plus he's a great glove, and can run the bases well. If his bat gets back on track, he's a complete player. If there's still too many players, Rickard to Norfolk. I'd like to see Tavarez stay with the org, if possible.

On the pitchers, I think it depends on how Buck wants to set up for the fifth starter.  I'm assuming that's down to either Ynoa or Aquino as Wright is hot garbage.  If he wants to keep these two on a regular rotation turn then they get sent out and he keeps Wilson and Nuno as the extra bullpen guys.  That's what I see happening.  Wilson gets sent out when the fifth starter comes up.

The extra position player will get sent out most likely when the fifth starter comes up. Not Wilson if he is doing OK.

I got Gentry and Rickard making team as RH corners to pair with Kim and Smith.  As long as Smith is healthy.  I think Tavarez makes it as the extra position player until the middle of April.  Then DD tries to slip him through waivers and make a deal with the Red Sox to keep him.

Wright optioned out.  Still a candidate for the 5th starters spot though!!!  I guess Ynoa and Aquino could come down with food poisoning.  Or Brady with a quick fix for Wright,

Could be me but im not a big fan of a Gentry

Whats not to like other than he has been injury prone the last 2 years or so.  Basically replacing Reimold, so the bar is low.  Speed. OF defense with arm, rakes LH pitching.  If healthy he is exactly what this OF needs.

Gentry's skills are far better than NR's. He's a defensive specialist, and great on the bases. NR didn't have either of those skills. And Gentry is better with getting on base. The only area that NR is better, is with power. But this team doesn't need more power, they need someone who can get on base, and be driven in.

If you cut Gentry for Mancini, you're forcing the team to either put Trumbo in RF, or Mancini. Mancini is barely keeping up with the OF, while playing in ST complexes. Imagine the comedy of errors that we'll be watching, when he tries to track balls coming at him in 3 tiered stadia.

Washington released the Vanimal, they preferred Guthrie as their long man. Vance has had a miserable ST

With Tavarez on waivers, I guess the extra position spot goes to Mancini or Alvarez.  Or if they carry 12 pitchers maybe they keep Drake since he is out of options. Should be interesting.

Tigers and O's on MASN today.  The new guy DD picked up, Alec Asher, is supposed to pitch in relief.  I think I'll try and catch a couple innings.  DD has had some decent luck salvaging these type of players off the bottom of other teams 40 man rosters.  Aquino, Lee and Ynoa all look like they can help.

Leave it to the Orioles to break camp with only three starting pitchers on the roster.  And I'm not saying that to be snarky.  No one juggles a roster like Dan & Buck.

First and foremost, the Orioles will end up starting the season with just three starting pitchers. That’s because Wade Miley is ticketed for the disabled list when the season begins. This is less of a big deal than it sounds. The new 10-day DL means that Miley can start the season on the DL and be activated in time for the first game where the fourth starter is needed on April 9.
