McDonogh Girls Lacrosse Wins 177th Consecutive Game

9 posts in this topic

With a 12-9 win over NDP, the McDonogh girls clinched their 9th consecutive IAAM A Conference Championship, 8th consecutive undefeated season and 8th consecutive national championship.

The win streak now sits at 177. One more year will have them at or near 200. Two more years should break the all-time team sports record of 218 by a girls' basketball team from Louisiana in the 1940s and 50s.

They passed the all time record for girls' lax (107?), which was held by Mount Hebron, a few seasons back.

I don't think the longest guys lax streak has reached 100 yet.

Incredible run by McDonogh. Speaks to the M&D travel program, as well as Western Howard County being the hotbed of girls/womens lacrosse in the country. That cut of the county has sent dozens of players to McD over the last decade. Western Howard County places 13 players on the top ranked Terrapins roster alone, including All-American Whittle (McD) and Twaarton finalist Stukenburg (Marriotts Ridge). 13! Of Course, 3-time Twaarton winner  and recent Terrapin graduate Taylor Cummings (McD) hails from West HoCo. Her sister, Kelsey, is a sophomore. Of the 13, 3 played for McD, 10 for their home schools. Glenelg is ranked #2 in the country, beating #3 NDP, 9-7. McD routed Marriotts Ridge, who is ranked #13 in the country, 22-7, 3 weeks ago. It should be noted, the 'Stangs played without their star goaltender (concussion). Still, a dominating win. 35 years ago, Columbia was considered a hotbed for soccer, with such talents like Darryl Gee, the #1 pick by the Minnesota Kicks in the NASL 1980 draft, plucked straight out of Oakland Mills, who would shortly thereafter be traded to the world renowned New York Cosmos, for their 1st and 2nd round picks. Oakland Mills would place another half dozen or more on the US teams and in the pros in that decade. Centennial, Wilde Lake, Howard, and Hammond would too, collectively. Now, the county boasts the best talent in the country in girls lacrosse, spearheaded by the M&D program, led by Chris and Scott Robinson, McD's braintrust, originally at Mt Hebron, helping guide the Vikings to 6 national championships.

Doesn't matter the gender or the game, that is impressive. The chance for just one slip-up when your team is that cut above the rest reflects outstanding coaching and player focus over the years.  Congratulations, go get the all-time record ladies.
