The stricken destroyer Fitzgerald has returned home, but 7 sailors are still missing

Seven sailors remain missing, and divers were standing by to assess the ship's damage and try to access the spaces that were flooded when Fitzgerald collided with a merchant ship nearly four-times its size in the middle of the night. The incident occurred in the Philippine Sea, about 50 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka.

Images show clearly the ship had taken on massive amounts of water during the ordeal. A news release from U.S. 7th Fleet confirmed that two berthing spaces, an auxiliary machine room and the ship’s radio room all flooded.

“The collision [a]ffected Fitzgerald's forward starboard side above and below the water line, causing significant damage and associated flooding to two berthing spaces, a machinery space, and the radio room, which damage-control teams quickly began dewatering,” the release said. “While those efforts helped stabilize the flooding, it remains uncertain how long it will take to gain access to the spaces once the ship is pier side in Yokosuka in order to methodically continue the search for the missing.”

I'm actually surprised that there isn't a thread on this (unless I'm stupidly missing it).

Seven sailors missing, and three medically evacuated including the Commanding Officer (reported in serious condition). Nightmare accident.

They just reported the 7 souls were found in a flooded berthing compartment.

Yes.

So sad and so tragically needless.

This sucks.

It looks like really good damage control on the crew's part. They saved the ship and a lot of lives.

Well that Captain will be out of a job. There will be an investigation of whoever else was on watch and what they did or didn't do. Someone Blew it, there's no way a Warship lets itself get rammed by a Merchantman. The Capt. bears the ultimate responsibility in the end though. That's the way it works.

The Navy and the locals need to conduct their investigations before I make any assumptions about the cause of this. I've been in the middle of an incident similar to this before (with less damage to the ship than this and no fatalities). Laying this on the CO or his crew without knowing what happened isn't fair, especially since they lost seven of their sailors in this incident. At least they recovered bodies so the families don't have to wait in suspense looking for them.

The Navy plans to discipline up to a dozen Fitzgerald sailors, including the commanding officer, in connection to the destroyer’s fatal June collision with a commercial ship that led to the drownings of seven sailors in their berthing.

In addition to Cmdr. Bryce Benson, the CO who was injured when the ACX Crystal struck the ship on June 17, the executive officer, Cmdr. Sean M. Babbitt, and Command Master Chief Brice A. Baldwin will also undergo non-judicial punishment this week, Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Bill Moran said Thursday.

I've read a few sources and it sounds like the bridge watchstanders are being NJPed along with the CO, XO, and CMC.
