Week 10 Playoff Points - Preseason

If one fearlessly ranks all 221 of Maryland's 2017 teams from 1 to 221 and then assumes the higher ranked teams win all games (using the schedules of the irreplaceable eaglesinsider), then the Week 10 playoff points will look like this (the exercise will be repeated using the 2017 MaxPreps pre-season rankings once they become available) :

2016 was a fairly decent prediction year, getting 50 of the 64 playoff teams - and of the 14 incorrectly predicted teams, 9 of them finished either 5th or 6th.

By far, the worst predictions were a 7-3 Northern-Cal who finished 1-9 (though they did forfeit 4 wins) and a 7-3 Sparrows Point who finished 2-8 (can't think of an excuse on this one).

Below are the actual and preseason predicted playoffs teams which are not, most admittedly, in order.

Parkside actually stayed in the 2A East this year.  The first classifications that were released had them at 3A, but they got changed back to 2A after an error was discovered.

Always enjoy reading your posts JMT, thanks.

ECF,

I am VERY sure Long Reach has taken a look at the teams in their region:

Long Reach
Parkside
JM Bennett
Atholton
Reservoir
Chesapeake-AA
Northeast
Stephen Decatur
Mt. Hebron
Centennial

From the way things "LOOKS" it appears that Long Reach "SHOULD" win their very first playoff game ever.  Now that would be an extremely great accomplishment for those young men. But hey...as Chris Berman always states, "That's why you play the game."  Can't think THAT FAR ahead, but it is a pretty good possibility.

Once again, we can thank the brainiacs that created the 3 divisions in Baltimore County. In the 3A North, you have Towson going 8-2 (which I think is unlikely but that's beside the point). If that happens and get the 4 seed over Dundalk, Aberdeen, Bel Air, Parkville, then they will likely travel to Milford or Franklin first round and get absolutely smoked, whereas any of those other 4 would be a much better match up. But since 3A Towson gets to play in the "Developmental Division" while the rest of the 3A teams all play each other, they come out with the better record. Same can be said for the 1A North (which has 16 teams btw) where Loch Raven could potentially get the 4 seed over Overlea, Douglass, and Randallstown. All superior teams but play in an actual competitive division rather than this idiocy of the "Developmental Diviosion".  LR would then travel to the 1 seeded team, which will be very ugly. Nicely done BaltCo, you've created a situation where the lower teams in the county can play each other for competition purposes, but also could potentially steal a playoff spot from a much better team, and then get routed in the playoffs.

I dont know the classification for all the schools in Baltimore County.   But generally speaking, the best option would be to put teams that are in the same region into one division. (Could someone could post them along with what division and region they are in?)

The best route, IMO, would be to have two 3A/4A & two 1A/2A divisions made up of 6 teams each.  Then make sure the 4A and 2A teams are placed into a division together.  That setup would also allow for five open dates for each team.  Which would allow for the 3A and 1A schools to schedule the other "same region" teams or any rivalries they don't get in division.

It would look something like this...

Catonsville, Dulaney, Perry Hall,  Dundalk, Franklin, Kenwood in "3A/4A Division 1"

Lansdowne, Milford Mill, Parkville, Patapsco, Towson, Woodlawn in "3A/4A Division 2"

Eastern, Hereford, Newtown, Owings Mill, Carver, Chesapeake in "1A/2A Division 1"

Loch Raven, Overlea, Pikesville, Randallstown, Sparrows Point, Western in "1A/2A Division 2"

You could also align the 3A & 1A schools according to record if there is a concern of competitive balance of the divisions.

Nomad the issue with your suggestion is Carver. They don't play football, so you're left with a 5 team division which makes scheduling even tougher. Baltimore County keeps bouncing back and forth between two divisions and 3 divisions. I think their 2 division alignment 4A/3A and 2A/1A is the best way to do it. You have a 12 team division and an 11 team division which is as balanced as it gets in a 23 school county. I also agree that putting struggling teams of differing classifications together in one division will hurt teams that are competing for playoff spots in their correct divisions.

Gotcha. Since Carver doesnt play football, I would still keep the two 3A/4A divisions and just make one 1A/2A division and make sure the 4 teams in 2A play each other.

We have a similar setup in MoCo (which has 25 schools).  Three 4A divisions made up of 5-7 schools each and one 3A/2A division made up of six schools.

Right on, my man! The Developmental League has GOT TO GO and never return again after the current cycle. Only Baltimore County could come up with an arrangement of four 3A teams and three 1A teams in the same division. No other jurisdiction in the state does anything as absurd as this.

No problem, as I already stated this back in December when the county was considering the 3 division idea.

Division 3 - All the 1A teams

Chesapeake

Loch Raven

Overlea

Pikesville

Randallstown

Sparrows Point

Western Tech

Each team plays all teams in division, and has 4 open dates

Division 2 - All 4 2A teams, 4 3A teams

Eastern Tech

Hereford

New Town

Owings Mills

Lansdowne

Patapsco

Towson

Kenwood

Each team plays all teams in division, 3 open dates

Division 1 - all 4A teams, 5 3A teams

Catonsville

Dulaney

Perry Hall

Milford Mill

Franklin

Dundalk

Parkville

Woodlawn

Each team plays all teams in division, 3 open dates

Now, I would say that with Dundalk Parkville Woodlawn Kenwood Towson Patapsco, it is definitely debatable as to which teams fit in D1 and which fit in D2, that's probably something that would be revisited every other year. But other than that, this is the way the 3 divisions make sense. In my humble opinion that is.

Absurd is a great word for it. I was actually in favor of the county going back to the 3 divisions, but the way they set it up is completely ridiculous
