Baltimore police are investigating the death of a rising sophomore and track sprinter at the Johns Hopkins University whose body was found Thursday morning in the 3700 block of N. Charles Street, just north of the university’s Homewood campus, police and university officials said.

University officials identified the student as Abigail Bastien, 19, of Sandusky, Ohio.

They and police said the cause of Bastien’s death was unknown as of Thursday afternoon. “On behalf of the entire Johns Hopkins community, we offer our deepest sympathies to Abby’s family and friends,” wrote Kevin G. Shollenberger, vice provost of student affairs, and Toni Blackwell, senior associate dean of student life, in an email to the university community Thursday.

Police said officers were called to the block about 7:50 a.m. and found Bastien’s body outside.

Det. Jeremy Silbert, a police spokesman, said early Thursday afternoon that he could not immediately provide any information about the cause or manner of death.

“We are still investigating,” Silbert said.

Thoughts and prayers to Abby's famil.

Man. I hope this isn't related to foul play.

Oh man.  Terrible.  Not that there was really a good story coming.  Just hate to see promising people die from tragic mistakes.

Yes, terribly sad. Sometimes it's just one moment of bad judgment. :(

Thoughts to her family.

Police say it appears that a Johns Hopkins University student athlete found dead last week near the campus accidentally fell to her death from a high-rise building near the campus.

Baltimore police spokesman T. J. Smith said at a news conference Monday that it appears that Abigail Bastien of Sandusky, Ohio, fell a significant distance. Smith says police are still awaiting toxicology results, but “everything points” to her death being accidental.

University officials say Bastien was found dead Thursday morning.
