Texas Proves that Defunding Family Planning Services Actually Leads to More Abortions

Quote

For years, Republican lawmakers in Texas have argued that defunding family planning services and Planned Parenthood was necessary to reduce the number of “immoral” abortions being performed in the state. But a new study shows exactly the opposite is true, and the justification for those funding cuts is based on a statistical falsehood.

In a study accepted for publication in the Journal of Health Economics, professor Analisa Packham, formerly of Texas A&M University and now at Miami University, found that the policy by Texas Republicans in 2011 to defund family planning services by 67%, or about $73 million, which resulted in the closure of 80 clinics, actually increased abortion rates by 4.9% over the next two years, and by 3.1% three years after the cuts took effect.

Packham calculated that teen birth rates also increased by about 3.4% over the four years after the cuts.

Naturally.

So where is the study on why teen birth rates increased?

Well, yeah, Planned Parenthood encourages contraceptive use and makes it available. It's kind of a no-brainer.

Agreed.  If only they would stick to contraceptives, family planning and REAL women's health care, even I would send them money.  Their insistence on facilitating the arbitrary ending of fetal life makes them contemptible.

Nothing to do with family planning services because parents will not take their teenage kids to such a place but with the abstinence only teaching in most Texas churches

So then more abortions are okay as long as Planned Parenthood is punished for being pro-choice?

You don't see the futility in stopping abortions by creating punitive laws against women and their healthcare providers. Sure, it let's you feel self-righteous about it and judge others, but that just adds to the absurdity and really, the immorality, of your stance.

Why do you people celebrate abortion like it's such a great thing?

Who does that?  The left celebrate the right of a woman to choose what is best for her unlike the right who wants to dictate what is right for all women.

If you really cared about preventing abortions, you would support them.

And yet, as we see, it is the policies of Republican Texas that is causing more abortions.

Like I said, 'clueless'.

Don't pretend like you are offended by an increased number of abortions. That is equivalent to a religious sacrament with you people.

This is the kind of posts that suggests the so-called 'pro-life' set aren't so much pro-life, since their policies actually cause MORE abortions.  But that they are a bunch of self-righteous finger wagers who are, well, clueless.

Therapy can help. :)

Ask the Texas GOP.  They are the ones fighting for more abortions

Indeed. At some point you have to judge these people by what they actually do, rather than what they say.

Your thoughts on morality are a joke.  Abortions have nothing to do with healthcare.

Nonsense.  What is causing an increase in abortions is more men and women deciding that their personal convenience is more important than the life of the fetus.

You people deflect your love of abortion by attacking me. I seriously don't know how people could support abortion at-will. I do make exceptions for heath of mother, health of baby, rape and incest.

If you want to reduce abortion you should increase birth control.  If that is not obvious you are either dumb or blinded by religion
