One of Baltimore's most beloved communities will soon get its own private security force in the wake of a citywide crime wave, a business leader said Tuesday.

Gia Blattermann, owner of Cafe Gia on Eastern Avenue and High Street in Little Italy, said she has been in discussions with officials at the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore to add an extra layer of security and community safety to the neighborhood in response to a spike in crime that included a foiled armed assault of a deacon at St. Leo's Roman Catholic Church on Friday near the parish rectory.

…Blattermann's comments came as business owners in the tight-knit community were only learning of the latest incident there: the attempted assault of St. Leo's Deacon Doug Kendzierski around 9 p.m. Friday as the classic movie "The Godfather" was beginning during an open-air summer film festival nearby.

Kendzierski left the rectory, said Fr. Bernard Carman, pastor at St. Leo’s, and was followed by a group of six youths, one who showed him a gun.

"One of the guys threw a bottle at him and it smashed in the street and made a loud noise," said Fr. Carman, who will host a meeting at the parish on Friday evening to discuss the incident and recent crime in Little Italy. "They turned and went away. Doug made it to the end of the block, told a police officer and he went all over the neighborhood and looked around and the guys were gone."

Just kids having fun, I guess.  Probably just looking for a pickup basketball game or something like that even if it sounds too naïve.

Any word or link on the deacon who got mugged as you stated in the other thread?

In the old days, the mafia would ensure the protection of the neighborhood. Now they're going to get 28 year olds on segways.

Allegedly during the 68 "unrest" the mafia placed machine guns on the roofs of a couple of buildings in li and let it be known to the "unresters".

Surprisingly there was no damage in the area.

In the old days, nothing of the kind would've taken place and if it did, you would've never heard about it. Looks like Harbor East will extend to Little Italy...

I remember reading in some book that there was a business owner, either Italian or Jewish, that sat on the roof above his business with a .30 caliber machine gun.
