The Baltimore Orioles are among the teams that have expressed interest in Chicago White Sox starters Miguel Gonzalez and Derek Holland, reports Bruce Levine of CBS Chicago.

The Orioles have won 15 of their past 24 and are a surprising 1 1/2 games back in the race for the second American League wild-card berth. Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports said Baltimore was "actively seeking" a starting pitcher before the July 31 deadline, but it failed to bolster a staff that ranks 29th in the majors in rotation ERA.

There is no guarantee either pitcher would provide a notable boost. The 33-year-old Gonzalez is 6-10 with a 4.85 ERA and 1.49 WHIP in 18 starts, although he did work eight strong innings in a win against the Astros on Wednesday. The 30-year-old Holland owns a 5.25 ERA and a career-worst 1.58 WHIP in 23 games (22 starts).

I'll start with the obvious. While both pitchers' stats aren't pretty, Gonzo is much better than Miley, and Holland is much better than UJ. Those upgrades will make a difference, even if it's a small one. And anything they do to increase their odds of winning, each night, is a good move.

With that said, I'm confused by this story. Miley is DD's guy. And UJ is Buck's guy. So it's shocking to hear of a potential move, that would result in either pitcher being replaced. If they release UJ, he may not sign re-sign with the team, next year.

We aren't winning anything with this rotation. Best-case we luck into a wild card spot (I don't think we are even close in the end), win the wc game, then we got slaughtered in an actual series...all because Angelos refuses to do the responsible thing and build for the future to actually WIN, not just appear to be competing. It's a joke.

All valid points!

I'm getting sick of this. Meanwhile there are young, capable and winning arms scattered around MLB who were in the Orioles system not long ago. This a joke.

Here's a bright idea, package the guy you just gave to the White Sox for Gonzo/ Holland if you're really interested in one of them

Nah, let's give them Johnson instead and start fresh and hopefully give them another starting pitcher from the embarrassingly depleted farm system.
