The statue of Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney is gone from the Maryland State House grounds after work crews removed it shortly before 2 AM on Friday, August 18, 2017: http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/politics/bs-md-taney-statue-removed-20170818-story.html

August 18, 2017

Under the cover of night, a work crew removed the statue of former Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney from the grounds of the State House, ending the monument’s 145-year perch on the prominent spot in Annapolis.

At 12:20 a.m. Friday, flatbed trucks with equipment including a large crane pulled onto State Circle, the street that surrounds the State House. Workers cordoned off the front lawn of the historic building and placed straps around the statue.

Just before 2 a.m., the statue was slowly lifted from its base and clipped a few tree branches as it was guided onto a flatbed truck and wrapped. The statue will be moved to a secure Maryland State Archives storage facility, according to an email outlining the operation obtained by The Baltimore Sun.

The Dred Scott decision was 7 to 2 , not even close.

If the decision was unconstitutional,  why was a constitutional amendment needed to change it ?

Better find out if the other 6 judges have statues and get rid of them.

That's a different Taney. They share a common ancestor though.

What might have been more fitting would have been to erect a much larger statue of Thurgood Marshall, looking down on Taney and waving his index finger, and placing it right next to the smaller Taney. Perhaps that might still be possible, with both relocated to a very prominent location where the awful message of the Dred Scott decision could become a visual teachable moment.

I think the polish one gun salute would be more appropriate.....don't  you think?

But on the other hand....the attempt is to whitewash history (no pun intended)....isn't that going the other way.... I thought that 'teachable moments' were not part of the possible dynamic of the confed statutes. and such.

Ohhhh ohhhhh wait....slap my head....silly me.....those are 'bad' teachable moments....what you suggest is a good teachable moment. Who decides?

Again devils advocate here....just pointing out FACTS not emotions per-se.

As long as we're getting rid of statues that some folks don't like... how about taking down the hideous "Male/Female" statue that defaces Penn Station? ;)
