Who should stay and who should go?

18 posts in this topic

Is it too soon to start this thread?

No.  No it is not.

Should the following free agents be resigned?:
Jeremy Hellickson - NO
Ubaldo Jimenez - NO
Chris Tillman - for a year at $10m or so, I'd say YES
Seth Smith - NO - I think Hays makes him expendable
Wade Miley - NO
Pedro Alvarez - NO
Ryan Flaherty - Sure, why not
Ruben Tejada - Nope
Craig Gentry - no sir
Paul Janish - let him walk
Chris Johnson - buh bye
Chris Dickerson - Nope

Players with options:
Wellington Castillo - $7m player option - I hope he decides to stay
JJ Hardy - $14m team option - just retire already, dude

Should they be offered arbitration? (arb year precedes the name):
1 - Tim Beckham - heck yeah
2 - Caleb Joseph - yep
2 - Jesus Montero - no
2 - Jonathan Schoop - just sign him
2 - Johnny Giavotella - goodbye Johnny
2 - Logan Schafer - If I've never heard of you, you are free to go
2 - Kevin Gausman - sign him long term
2 - Vidal Nuno - meh, who cares
3 - Manny Machado - sign him or trade him
3 - Zach Britton - should have traded him last winter.  Stuck with him how.
3 - Brad Brach - Keep him around
3 - Lucas Luetge - see Logan Shafer

What say you?

My only differences is I'd bring back Gentry and there is no way I'd bring back Tillman at 10mil.  Maybe a make good minor league deal of some sort where he could make 5 mil if he makes the team.  He just doesn't look to have ML stuff to me anymore.

I think he's still showing effects of the injury, and I'd bet a lot of GMs might too.  I honestly think there will be a market for him.  I think he'll end up with a cautious one year deal somewhere.

Wit the dearth of starting pitching you are dead on.  Even Dud Norris got a big league dal after his 2015 year that sank that season for us.  Dud and Tilly were equally putrid.

Chris Tillman - for a year with incentives.
Seth Smith - NO - give Hays a chance.
Wade Miley - HAHAHA
Pedro Alvarez - who cares.
Ryan Flaherty - Ugh
Ruben Tejada - no.
Craig Gentry - no.
Paul Janish - no.
Chris Johnson - no.
Chris Dickerson - no.

Considering Castillo's staff ERA is 1.60 runs PER GAME higher than Wieters' was here last year, and 1.40 runs PER GAME higher than Joseph's this year... I wouldn't care one iota if his MINIMAL increased offensive production went elsewhere next year.

I would bring back Gentry. Good speed and defense off the bench. Rather have him than Smith. As for Castillo, I would try to resign him but if we lose him focus on defense for that position as we have plenty of 20 HR hitters on the team. Please just focus on pitching and do NOT resign Ubaldo - read rumors Orioles were thinking about that, that would be height of insanity.

Think I pretty much agree with your assessment of these players also.

Buck and Dan and anyone who oversees pitching development and evaluation can go also

And Dickerson? Have you had enough of him sending runners only to watch them get thrown out by 10 feet?

Cool. I know I sure have. I mean...in that situation...he has ONE JOB: to assess the situation and either send the runner, or hold the runner. ONE JOB. He's seeing the whole field -- the outfielder, and the runner. And it's not as if his calls are off by an inch or so for close plays at the plate. He sends runners WHO ARE OUT BY A MILE. And it's not as if it's only happened once or twice. It's been happening ALL YEAR LONG. Any real manager with any balls would have fired this guy months ago. But again...it's on BUCK'S watch, and it couldn't be more wrong. And while it might not be the biggest problem; in fact, on the overall scale it's probably the smallest problem. But it's an example of just how out of touch this team, and its manager, really is.

I wouldn't mind a starting outfield of Mancini, AJ and Hays to start next season. A little raw on the corners, but much more athletic than any outfield we've had in a while.
