Bannon Backs Grimm, Ex-Congressman and Felon, in G.O.P. Challenge

22 posts in this topic

Michael Grimm, who is trying to win back his old House seat after serving time in federal prison, secured a notable new supporter on Wednesday: Stephen K. Bannon, President Trump’s former chief strategist, who has sought to bolster the candidacies of populist outsiders since leaving the White House.

The two met at Mr. Bannon’s Capitol Hill townhouse on Wednesday afternoon, three days after Mr. Grimm announced he was challenging Representative Dan Donovan of Staten Island for the Republican nomination in New York City’s last G.O.P.-held congressional seat.

“We’re joining the Bannon portfolio of Republican challengers to anti-Trump Republican congressmen,” said Michael Caputo, a Grimm adviser who also served as an adviser to Mr. Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign.

How are felons even eligible for Congress?

Especially one that threatened a journalist who brought up the ex congressmans situation that he was convicted and put in prison for.

Just consider the last 7 days of Trumps administration.

Just one week.

because the framers assumed the people wouldn't vote for a criminal to represent them in Washington and therefore, did not but a clause barring convicted felons from running....you would think somethings would not need codifying, however....

being a repugnican, he'll get lots of support from the party over country folks...

Amazing that they don't want felons to vote but they don't care if they hold elected office.

Come on be realistic, this is one of those things that both sides actually do. Support unethical, criminal, questionable, etc., etc., people for public office. While not Federal does anyone remember Marion Barry.

But I certainly agree with ivanbalt's post.

that's one way to deflect...bring up a dead mayor.....this issue is about criminal records....if unethical and questionable were considerations, about 99% of the current crop would be unemployed....this includes the head of the organized crime family known as Trump.....

who was the last time a dem, who was a convicted felon, ran for congress? is there one in the last 100 yrs?

the discussion is about the here and now...and as I explained, the requirements to run for congress does not exclude one from running kjust because they are a convicted felon.....

Even a (conservative) felon is preferable to a Democrat.  The Democrat brand has been on a multi-year free fall.

Unlike you people and Obama, I refuse to trust Iran at their word. Iran got a sweetheart deal. I understand the US cannot unilaterally undo it, but we shouldn’t be part of it. And for the record, Republicans and Jewish Democratsctried to pull a fast one where they could vote no, while agreeing to a framework to ensure it passed. It will be interesting to see them now when it comes to debate again

Being a convicted or plea-bargained felon should be a disqualifier for holding state and federal office. Towns and counties don't have that much influence, but let's keep crooks out of the important jobs.

Beats me. Bannon and Trump have no moral compass at all. It's really incredible.

It doesn’t say they aren’t in the Constitution.
