Trump’s threat to NBC’s license is the very definition of Nixonian

93 posts in this topic

President Trump is yet again threatening to crack down on media outlets he doesn't like. But this time he's doing it in a much more brazen fashion. And it's almost exactly what Richard Nixon appeared to attempt in the 1970s.

The difference here is that Nixon talked about the scheme only privately.

Here is what Trump tweeted Wednesday morning:

With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License? Bad for country!

Update: Trump added on Wednesday afternoon that it's "frankly disgusting the way the press is able to write whatever they want to write, and people should look into it.”

A top Democrat says the president's threat to challenge NBC's broadcast license over a story he disagrees with undermines freedom of the press.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday took aim at TV network NBCsuggesting in a tweet that the Federal Communications Commission revoke the broadcasters license.

The tweet was one in a series from Trump in which he criticized the network for a story it published Wednesday stating he wanted to increase the US nuclear arsenal by nearly tenfold.

"Fake @NBCNews made up a story that I wanted a 'tenfold' increase in our U.S. nuclear arsenal. Pure fiction, made up to demean. NBC = CNN!" Trump wrote on Twitter Wednesday.

He continued, "With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License? Bad for country!"

So the other day we had some folks spewing the bumper sticker line about the "second amendment <supposedly> protecting the first."

lets hear from them.

oh wait, no, because this exposes what an idiotic saying that is.

This is a dangerous idea, a threat to our liberties and a slippery slope. It sounds like you people as it pertains to Fox and Talk Radio.

The only person I have seen threatening to use the federal government in a crackdown on news outlets is the president.

What "license" does NBC have?  Maybe the Owned&Operated stations and the affiliates, but I'm not aware of a network license.

No, but you really know Trump can't do it. He's just all bluster.

He'd do it if could, in heartbeat. He's made it clear he has no regard for democratic values and institutions. A classic totalitarian attitude. Petty, vindictive and insecure, he's a very sick man.

Unfortunately for us and the world all bluster can very easily escalate into something dangerous and potentially deadly

Well he can't all by himself, but he damn sure can spearhead the effort

From the article

"But here's the thing: That has actually happened before. Nixon allies did challenge the licenses of TV stations whose owners ran afoul of Nixon. And those owners were The Washington Post Co."

So, should he so desire he could spearhead an effort to at the very least make life hell for NBC.  The very suggestion in his tweet is dangerous, whether he himself can do it or not

He was referring to the report that said he wanted to increase the nuclear arsenal 10 fold, which was absolutely a fake news story. If the NBC is so worried about saber rattling getting us into a nuclear conflict with the fat kid in NK, why would they make an outrageous claim and say the generals present were "taken a back" ? Can there even be an action taken against NBC?

Notice the words used in the denials.  The article says he wanted the increase... the admin is saying that trump never "called for" the increase.  Those are two different things

Right you are. So once again we see that the man-child in the Oval Office is not only unhinged but uninformed.
