Attorney General considering using government to go after political opponents

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is entertaining the idea of appointing a second special counsel to investigate a host of Republican concerns — including alleged wrongdoing by the Clinton Foundation and the controversial sale of a uranium company to Russia — and has directed senior federal prosecutors to explore at least some of the matters and report back to him and his top deputy, according to a letter obtained by The Washington Post.

The revelation came in a response by the Justice Department to an inquiry from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), who in July and again in September called for Sessions to appoint a second special counsel to investigate concerns he had related to the 2016 election and its aftermath.

[Latest: Sessions says he ‘always told the truth’ in describing Russia contacts ]

The list of matters he wanted probed was wide ranging but included the FBI’s handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was secretary of state, various dealings of the Clinton Foundation and several matters connected to the purchase of the Canadian mining company Uranium One by Russia’s nuclear energy agency. Goodlatte took particular aim at former FBI director James B. Comey, asking for the second special counsel to evaluate the leaks he directed about his conversations with President Trump, among other things.

well it has been an arm of the Obama admin and dems for some time now so its time for  the pendulum to switch-- but actually Hillary is not an opponent anymore, as she is finished politically, by her own party yet

The FBI already investigated Clinton’s emails and the Clinton Foundation. They didn’t find anything illegal.

I think Sessions is just saying “maybe” instead of “no” to get Republicans off his back...

Donny has been harping on this for a while. His own party is responsible for the current investigations so I don't know how he figures he's getting back at the Democrats.

It's a crazy world in Washington nowadays.

Who did the DOJ investigate under Obama that was politically motivated?

Testimony by Sessions would seem to suggest he's just attempting to pacify the kooks and cranks in the GOP with the letter. Bottom line to me is it sounded very unlikely.

Another attempt at using a page from 'The rise of Hitler and Nazism 101'

Say it ain't so.

That is just as disturbing. The Congress, which is in charge of providing oversight over the departments of the executive branch seem to not only do more to protect it and shield it, but are more concerned with a failed presidential candidate.

This is Roger Stone's plan: subpoena Mueller and bury him in paperwork to prevent him from being able to focus on the Russia Investigation.

Well, well, well, isn't that strange?

You're right that Hillary isn't an opponent anymore. Why would Mr Trump be so interested in pursuing her on this long shot?

Hmm.... Could it be that Trump and Sessions have, all of a sudden, become really really keen on the pursuit of Justice? That they deeply care about the integrity of government?? Pfft...

Or is the simplest explanation the best one: that this is yet another bulls--t attempt at distraction from the multifaceted downward spiral of Trump's administration?

Yes. The people senior prosecutors DOJ that he directs to look into things will likely come back with what you and I already know, that there’s nothing there. At least in terms of the uranium thing. I’m not as familiar with the other matters.

The executive departments are always an arm of the party whose man sits at the Resolute Desk. Trump's just more overt about it than other presidents.

#FAKENEWS    Sessions said nothing of the kind.

Incorrect. From the article above.

"In response, Assistant Attorney General Stephen E. Boyd wrote that Sessions had “directed senior federal prosecutors to evaluate certain issues raised in your letters,”...:
