Fire investigators have determined that a 3-year-old child playing with burners on a stove in a first-floor apartment caused the Thursday night fire that killed at least 12 people in the Bronx, FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said Friday.  And in the cold morning-after daylight, authorities searched for an explanation, a "why" behind one of the deadliest fires in New York City's recent history.

"This tragedy is, without question, historic in its magnitude," the city's fire commissioner, Daniel Nigro, said. "Our hearts go out to every family who lost a loved one here and everyone fighting for their lives."  A first-floor apartment in the building had defective carbon monoxide and smoke detectors months ago, according to a city agency.

RIP. :(

Rest in peace. A tragedy, moreso because it was avoidable (if the safety equipment had been repaired).

In this litigious society, ambulance chasing attorneys convince people there’s potential profit in tragedies. Society would be better off with less lawyers.

Society would be better off with responsible, honest landlords.

Why shouldn't they?

They can do whatever they like. But this fire was the fault of the people who let their child play with the stove. But they don’t have millions so let’s find some way to blame the city.

Some jurisdictions have the concept of distributed fault, which might not be called that. The concept is that various individuals bear portions of the blame. Not having functioning safety equipment is partially responsible. I agree that the bulk of responsibility belongs with parents who failed to supervise properly. But the landlord owns some of it.

One broken smoke detector in a first floor apartment was not the problem here. This lawyer is just throwing everything against the wall and hoping something sticks.

It will have merit if the required safety nets weren't in place.  Yes they should also sue the parents.
