Baltimore makes the national News for the wrong reasons again

A video of a patient being left in freezing cold outside a Baltimore hospital has gone viral

CBS News:

Overnight, Imamu Baraka was walking past a Baltimore hospital when he noticed something he says he'll never forget. The hospital's security guards had just wheeled a patient to a bus stop, and in the freezing temperatures they left her there. The only thing she had on was a hospital gown.

"It's about 30 degrees out here right now," Baraka says in a recording of the encounter. "Are you OK, ma'am? Do you need me to call the police?" he asks.

It's called "patient dumping" and it doesn't just happen in Baltimore. In 2007, "60 Minutes" investigated the practice of removing homeless patientsfrom Los Angeles hospitals and leaving them downtown.

University Of Maryland Medical Center.  Unbelievable!

HIPPOCRATIC OATH: MODERN VERSION

I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:

I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.

I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures [that] are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism.

I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.

I will not be ashamed to say "I know not," nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient's recovery.

I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God.

I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.

I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.

I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.

If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.

—Written in 1964 by Louis Lasagna, Academic Dean of the School of Medicine at Tufts University, and used in many medical schools today.

Baltimore health care!!!

This never should have happened.  Seems like the University of Maryland Midtown never heard that Maryland has uncompensated care reimbursement and a Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

It took four big guards to escort that woman out of the hospital to dump her at a bus stop with nothing but a gown and a plastic bag, and the best that the hospital can come up with is that "possible personnel actions" might result because of this?

The irony is a ambulance was called and took her right back in the entrance she was just kicked out of.

With that being said I'm glad the ones that kicked her out aren't white.

This way the problem can be addressed without the usual BS.

Somewhere in University Hospital a head or heads should roll for this shameful incident. The security guards should have protested being asked to dump this woman outside in freezing weather and whoever ordered her expulsion should be fired summarily.

What possible excuse can hospital officials offer for such horrific treatment of a patient, any patient?

I can't imagine the mind set of the people involved in physically wheeling this woman to the bus stop and leaving her there. It's disturbing to think people of that nature are working in a hospital.

If you read the article, this practice isn't confined to Baltimore, called "patient dumping".

Seems that idea that somehow people lacking insurance magically access care is a myth.

And you're  informed that's the reason this happened?

This is not on Baltimore City.  The University of Maryland Medical Center is a state owned facility.  Its on the State of Maryland and by extension the tax payers and residents.  The Legislature and the Governor should be taking a very hard look at this.

If she had insurance or the means to pay, they would have kept her longer than necessary. And I'm sure being black didn't gain her any points.

This looks really bad. There needs to be a reason for this. Wait for the hospitals response.

We already know the reason for this.  This is a common practice among hospitals all across the country with patients who are unable to pay

The ones who threw out the patient isn't the problem. It's the one who ordered it.

Oh ok............

Point still stands.

And ironically you are one of the two people that came to mind when I posted it.

Guess who the other one is?

The one who ordered it is most culpable, but the ones who followed that inhumane order bear a measure of responsibility, too.

Turfing, which used to mean transfering charity cases to the charity hospital, has been around forever. This is apparently the next evolution of that.
