INDIANAPOLIS -- Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich has been hired to be the Indianapolis Colts' next head coach.

He will receive a five-year deal, according to a source.

Reich replaces Chuck Pagano as coach after a search that took a few twists and turns. Indianapolis announced that Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels had agreed to take the job on Feb. 6 and scheduled an introductory news conference for the next day. McDaniels called Colts general manager Chris Ballard later that evening and reneged on the agreement, saying he decided to stay with New England. Ballard took the blame for the team's announcing the agreement with McDaniels before he signed the contract.

Actually, the Josh McDaniels snub may turnout to be a blessing in disguise for the Colts.  We'll have to see how Frank Reich does as a head coach, but I think he has as good or better of a chance at being successful as McDaniels.  Josh McDaniels was horrible as Denver's head coach.  And really his whole body of work as an OC in this league is predicated on having Tom Brady as his QB.  His only stint without Brady was 2011 when he was the OC with the St. Louis Rams.  The Rams finished 2-14 that year and their offense was ranked dead last in the league scoring only 193 points in 16 games.  In 12 of those games they were held to 13 points or under.  It's a lot easier to be a great OC when you have the greatest QB of all time on your side.  McDaniels may have screwed the Colts, but in the end the Colts might be better off that he did.

This is a net win for the Colts. McDaniels may be one of the most overrated coaches of this generation.

McDaniels is one of the worst HC's of recent memory. It's proven he sucks outside of NE and doesn't have the ability to identify the talent needed to build a winning team. He traded the farm for Tebow for crying out loud.

Reich is no doubt an improvement over him. This Eagles coaching class is going to be a good one. I read an article this morning about how they all believe in adapting to players strengths instead of forcing round pegs through square holes -- like most other NFL coaches do.

With Luck healthy, I hate to say it but the Colts could be a force to be reckoned with. They still have a way to go -- not a lot of talent on the roster -- but with Luck healthy they have the most important position filled for a long time.
