One positive aspect to Russia's efforts to disrupt the 2018 elections

10 posts in this topic

There won't be a useful idiot at the top of the ticket to aid their effort. But one has to wonder, how many other Republicans will do their bidding? And how will Trump try and reward them for their efforts?

Appearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats said that Russia will continue using propaganda, false personas and social media to undermine the upcoming elections.

“There should be no doubt that Russia perceives its past efforts” to disrupt the 2016 presidential campaign “as a success,” and it “views the 2018 midterm elections” as another opportunity to conduct an attack, said Coats, testifying at the committee’s annual worldwide threats hearing.

His assessment was echoed by all five other intelligence agency heads present at the hearing, including CIA Director Mike Pompeo, who two weeks ago stated publicly he had “every expectation” that Russia will try to influence the coming elections.

The Trump administration has left us woefully unprepared. I wonder why?

What would you have anyone do about this?  Strengthening voting systems to prevent hacking is a legitimate concern, but preventing the spread of propaganda particularly through social media?  What measures do you think should be taken against this?

Well I won't argue that Trump has done absolutely nothing in regards to election security.  But it is mostly on the individual states to monitor their elections and most have taken measures since 2017 to strengthen their security.  My main point is in regard to what Director Coats specifically mentioned, propaganda via social media.  I just don't see any way to prevent that.  The Russians have always used propaganda back to the days of the cold war.  For that matter, so has the US.  The advent of the internet and social media has just given them a much easier, faster, and more direct way to employ it.

No one told that kgb agent to cut it out?  Who let him undermine our election?
