Thinking of going to Singapore next May for my 40th and combining Thailand or Cambodia with it. Anyone ever been?

I just have to go to the hawker markets in Singapore. Every time I see Bourdain there, I just have to go and experience that.

I've been to Singapore. Hot and humid. Really hot and humid. I mean freaking hot and humid.  Orchids are a big thing in Singapore, so the botanical gardens were cool. Raffles hotel is absolutely gorgeous and home to the Singapore Sling. Clark Quay is a fun area with shops/restaurants/bars. The markets are pretty cool, and the food is decent. Ever tried the fruit Durian? There is plenty of it in Singapore. How they eat it, I don't know because the smell is disgusting.  Night markets in Hong Kong are much better. Also, prostitution is rampant. I have not been to Thailand or Cambodia.

If I had my choice between Singapore and Hong Kong it would be 100% Hong Kong.

Cool...good to know. Thanks!

My wife has been banging the drum for Thailand for years...I'd prefer just to fly 3 hours and chill on a Caribbean beach as opposed to 25 hours, so if we were gonna go to Thailand, I was going to try to do Singapore too.

25 Hours? There's No Way I'd do that!!!

I'm Done Flying! Since the only place I've gone the last 10yrs has been LV 2X a year, I decided my last trip in Dec there was the End. Other than considering how they cram you into the planes like Sardines worse than it's ever been, it's just an all day travel ordeal. Drive to BWI, park in Long Term, get the Shuttle to the Terminal. Then check in at the curb and check the bag, Then the long hike thru the airport to stand in line for the TSA. Then another hike to the gate and wait for the flight and then stand & wait to Board. Then it's a 5hr flight to LV. Then take the trek to the carousel to get your bag then hop their shuttle to the Car Rental Terminal. Go through that line, then pick up your car and drive to the hotel. Find a place to park in the garage then drag your bag to Check In and then make your way to the room. Altogether it's easily 8 or more like 9 hours that you just about used the whole day Traveling. Then at the end of the week you have to do it all over again in reverse. In my 50's I didn't mind it all that much but now in my 60's, Sheesh! When I drove up to AC in March I made it to Harrah's in 3hrs Flat! That's It now. I'll stay a week up there and drive in my own comfort with my tunes and/or audiobooks playing. AC ain't LV but it'll do.

We get it. It's strictly LV and AC for you. That's all you can talk about, even on threads that have nothing to do with casinos. LOL. Some people would think you're the crazy one for spending all your time in casinos.

Some people want to experience real culture, eat different food, meet different people and not spend their whole life cooped up in windowless buildings handing over money to corporations. Don't get me wrong, I love a good AC trip...about once every 3 years. Outside of that I'm trying to get my passport stamped as much as possible.

Never been a Beach person, I get no kick just laying around in the Sun. I've worked Outside in All Weather for most of my life in the Marine Industry. Anywhere I go now I like the Inside where they have AC in the Summer & Heat in the Winter. Different Cultures? I get enough of that Here. Different People? I get enough of them at Work. Have been in most of our Port cities all up & down the East Coast from Boston down to Jacksonville and a couple in the Gulf. I got to sample plenty of "Culture". Been to Denver where one Co. had schools & seminars for us and I was up on Pikes Peak and down into Great Gorge. OK but mainly Big Whoop. Nature doesn't do that much for me, had enough camping all those years in Boy Scouts & Explorers. Different Food? Not a Seafood fan. I enjoy clogging my veins with Beef. Nuff Said there. I'm not going where people don't speak the same language, I get enough Dialects all around the States here. As I've said before, I'm Done flying now so that's that. Actually Never saw the inside of a Casino till in my 50's. After my Dad passed, my Mom one day said she Missed how Dad would take her to AC so I stepped up and said OK, I've Never been so I took Mom up to AC and we stayed at the Trop for a couple nights my first time and that was that. I've been going to both AC and/or LV at least 3-4 times a year since. Dad's folks were in NJ not all that far from the shore up closer to Seaside Heights and I lived & worked for 3 yrs up in Linden close to Port Newark early in my career so I already knew my way around NJ. NYC too but that's another bunch of stories. Loved LV for 2x a year for the last 10 but well, Flying is Over for me now. I don't Gamble here at all, for me it was always about getting Away to Stay & Play. And that's about it.

Nice!  Enjoy!

I've been planning a big trip for next year with 7 girlfriends, we are all turning the big 5-0! My research is down to Aruba and Costa Rica. Safety was first for us and Aruba popped as the most safe according to the State Department. Everything I have seen, it looks amazing. I hope you have a great bday trip!!

Thanks. My first trip to the Caribbean was when I turned 50 three years ago.  I decided every birthday starting then will be on a different island. Aruba looks pretty amazing.

WOW Airlines will offer flights to India later this year.

As well as more frequent flights to Iceland.

I flew Wow to Amsterdam in 2016 and it went pretty well. Newer planes, which was cool, but be prepared to be nickle and dimed for everything. I think only water was free and that's because it's an overnight flight.

Costa Rica doesn't look like it has the best beaches.

Costa Rica has some awesome beaches!

This is where my family stayed a couple of years back.

https://ylangylangbeachresort.com/

We were driven up the beach about a mile in Land Rovers to get there. No roads.

Fresh seafood and fruit at the outstanding resort restaurant.  Fall to sleep listening to the ocean outside the door.  Wake to howler monkeys in the jungle.

I'm not a beach person, but I'd go back in a heartbeat!

Those beaches look like they have a lot of rocks...and the water is rougher. I'm more of  crystal clear blue Caribbean beach kinda guy.

I'd still go to CR in a heartbeat and explore the jungles, feed monkeys, etc.

So I've been bouncing around trying to figure out where to go for the big 4-0. I think Singapore is out and Buenos Aires / Mendoza / Santiago is in.

I’ve always wanted to visit Chile. See the Andes, visit Atacama Desert, tour Santiago. Just too long a flight for my wife to endure any more.

As far as islands, we started the “different island every year” thing years ago, but after a few, we keep coming back to Jamaica. Just love the place.

I truly truly love Buenos Aires! They are not overly fond of us Yankees, but it is a beautiful place! Getting to LaBoca on a Sunday is a must to watch the Tango dancers. Spectacular! Some of the greatest wines I have ever had, and not to mention the steak! Recoleta cemetary is also a must see. It is where Evita is buried. I thought I would only be in there for a little bit, but ended up spending hours there. If you see people on the streets selling empanadas, treat yourself, as they are homemade and fabulous.

I think they have suspended the fee for their exit visa's for us Yanks. That'll save you some money.

That Buenos Aires / Mendoza / Santiago will be a great trip!

Yeah the food and wine is a big selling point!

I haven't been but I've been told the beaches are amazing. They also have the rain forest which I would love.  Best of all, low crime stats and no warnings from the State Department.

We spent a couple of weeks there.

On the Caribbean east coast we stayed at a resort several hours up the coast. We got there by a real life Disney jungle boat ride.  Don't drag your hands overboard because of crocs. We saw sea turtles laying eggs on the beach in the middle of the night. The turtles coming ashore caused the sharks to hang out close to shore, so no swimming. They had a very nice pool with waterfall though. We explored the jungle in a small power boat.  Monkeys and tropical birds everywhere.

Bus ride to the mountains and the Arenal Volcano. There they had volcanic-heated hot tubs placed along the hill, with water slides connecting them.  The hottest tub was at the top, and the further down the hill you slid, the cooler the water.  Bars strategically placed down the hill.  Arenal was active so the ground shook and the mountain roared at times. A bit disconcerting at 3am.

Then off West into the mountains.  Monte Verde is 10,000 feet up!  The kids went zip lining, I explored the butterfly zoo, rain forest, and humming bird feeders.  Thousands of birds zipping about. Hiked on swinging bridges spanning 1000 foot gorges and into forest canopies.

Our hotel had a bar where you could see the Pacific sunset.  Imperial Beer is the local brew, and is excellent.

Then down the mountain and onto a ferry that took us to Montezuma, where we went to the Ylang Ylang resort on the Pacific. (See link above)

Snorkeling, surfing, swimming, seafood... what's not to like!?

The people are so friendly and open.  I would recommend it to anyone.

Pura vida!

The place in CR I want to go to is called Tortuguero. You can only get there by boat or plane.

If I'm reading it correctly that place seems to be very reasonably priced.
