I almost bought a SMLE back around '90 long ago at a show, one guy had a crate of them for like $39. I recall they were short barrel "Jungle Carbines". There were other Oldies like Argentinian Mausers cheap too. Just wasn't interested in old surplus bolt actions. That's where I got my Chinese SKS for like $79. Now That's a Fun and Cheap shooter. Got a thumbhole stock AK for like $200 back then too. Never got around to buying the "Regular" stock and grip for it. Really not as accurate with the shorter barrel as the SKS so not as much Fun on the range. Eventually I caved and for the heck of it after seeing "Enemy at the Gates" I bought a Mosin Nagant for I think it was $129 back then. Never got a scope for it though. It's a Beast! I don't think any of those have Appreciated much. That's OK, I just wanted them for the heck of it. I guess my "Prizes" are my M1 Postal Meter Carbine and my Original Colt AR SP1.

God..39 for a Jungle Carbine and still in the shipping crate (I assume new/old surplus). The last time I looked they are going for big $$$$$ now. I envy you an your M-1 carbine....always wanted one....and a Garand and a 1911. Funny they were cheap when I didn't have any money to spare. Now I have some money to spare but not enough....to spare.

That's right ….he retired recently didn't he. As they say everyone needs a hobby...since I retired it seems my wife's catch up-honey-do lists is mine.

Amazing...I have a list of 20 items.....I do one. the list stays at 20 or increases.

And the wonder why men die early after retirement.

something else that belongs on a battlefield and not in someones home.  ban it, and fine people $5,000/day until they turned it in.  that will quickly get them off the streets

Tell you what yeah.....give me 5000 dollars and you can have my Enfield to destroy.

I suspect that some gun owning lawyer zeroed in on that very question either for a hefty fee (or perhaps for an opportunity to get 15 minutes of fame).

There have been a number of cases as of late predicated on just that  Here is the most recent example;

Judge blocks Illinois town's assault weapons ban: report

http://thehill.com/homenews/news/392032-judge-blocks-illinois-towns-assault-weapons-ban

Illinois town votes to ban assault weapons, fine violators up to $1,000 per day

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/illinois-town-votes-to-ban-assault-rifles-fine-violators-1000-per-day/

And this is a good read from the town newspaper review.

According to the suit, those would include the ban on assault weapons even if safely stored; the banning of handguns and ammunition that the village has defined as assault weapons to holders of concealed-carry permits, and the elimination of an exception for self-defense.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/deerfield/news/ct-dfr-assault-weapon-ban-lawsuit-tl-0412-story.html

What these article does not say is that guns that would be turned in ….and the owner is SOL on compensation. They all hide it by using the word confiscated...nicer than taking your investment away and giving you the finger.

FYI still working, not retired yet. Gambling is another Hobby that I didn't discover till after Dad died in 2003 and my Mom told me she missed when he used to take her up to AC to stay a couple nites from time to time. So one day I said "I'll take you up!" and that was the 1st time I'd ever been in a Casino myself and the rest is history. I took her up a few times and we stayed and played, She's the one who showed Me around the Casinos up there but then She passed in 2006. I think I was a Good Son for doing that.

Anyway... Yeah they were Short barrel SMLEs but I was also put off about surplus .303 ammo, someone told me all of it was Corrosive so I passed. Buddy of mine got a Norinco (Chinese) M1A pretty cheap before the US Gov't cut them off from Exporting arms here back in the '90's. I never got one. I did get a Norinco "Model of 1911A" before the cut off. Don't remember what I paid, maybe 3 something but under 5 most likely. It came parkerized but I got a shop out in Woodbine to Strip it and do it in a Satin finish. It came out as kind of a light Beige Satin that really looks neat. Most everything I got on the Cheap as I couldn't afford the originals. My Hi-Power is a Hungarian copy, PJK that is every bit a clone of the Browning but a good $200 less when they were like 5 and a half at the lowest. Got a Soviet Makarov .380 in Nickel from a shop in Essex back then for like $250. That's the Russkie idea of a PPK. It's neat that is says "Made in Russia" on the slide. I've looked around lately and you can still find Makarovs but not in nickel. They're rare now.

However after Duffy's range closed, i didn't have anywhere to go where you could just blast away on an afternoon. Then W95 came out and well... I've been through 5 or 6 PCs and 4 laptops since even building one PC up on my own. So... another Hobby. But I still have all my Other Hardware. :)

Bart....seems like you have a nice little collection.

Regarding the corrosiveness of .303 ammo that is true if you buy surplus OLD surplus. I believe they used some sort of mercury primer and that was the problem. I total avoid that by reloading my own. Much cheaper and better quality control. If your looking into a new hobby reloading is a lot of fun and not that expensive to get started as  you may think. PM me I can give you more info if you wish.

I am not familiar with Duffy's where was that? Where do you shoot now. Look into AGC in Marriottsville….Range pass is about 150 after you join an affiliated club. You can shoot all day to your hearts contend. 200 and 100 yd range....pistol range...trap....steel shooting...etc. I spent a lot of time checking out other ranges and for the money you can't beat it.

Again PM me if you want more info.

Duffy's was a shop out on Falls Rd North past Timonium a ways. I remember going out 83 past there then you went left off 83 maybe Shawan Rd then rt onto Falls Rd north. A few miles up there and the shop was on the right. Then you drove to the next road and made a left and drove another couple min then made a rt onto to the road where the range was. I knew how to get there but that's like 20 some years now. Out around or past Cockeysville somewhere I guess, I figure they were a victim of Urban Sprawl. More and more property was bought up out there and houses were going up nearby and that was the end of that.  They had a small range with like 8 stations, benches, covered that you had to lug your stuff up this hill to get to. They allowed Full Auto weapons on the weekends and they had a 4th of July shoot every year where they put a junk car out 100yds or so which was pretty much at the end of the range and everyone would shoot it to pieces. I saw all kinds of hardware out there as I mentioned before, Some Hunting guys but a lot of Ex-Military & Cops and just Rich guys that had the Big stuff. The Shop owner was a fairly young guy named Wilhelm if memory serves. He's the one that had the 20mm Lahti Anti-Tank Rifle.

That's a pretty extreme judgement. To most it's just another Hobby. Back in the day at Duffy's range on their 4th of July shoots I saw all kinds of hardware up to a 20MM Anti Tank rifle, wheeled 3" Black Powder cannon, and one guy had a twin .30 Browning MG rig. M60's, MG42s, Mac 10's, Uzi's you name it. Those guys had much bigger Wallets than me. Ever see the Vids on You Tube with guys with gigantic RC airplanes up to jets? Same thing if you've got the Cash. I know one guy with 1/2 a dozen 60-70's Muscle cars. Whatever floats your boat. I had one of those once myself too. The vast majority are Responsible people. You get a Nut thrown in there now & then with Any hobby. My stuff has mostly sat in the locker for years now, I've changed Hobbies a couple times over the years. In August I'll be in AC for a week.

Yep.  Thanks.  You were pretty much what I was picturing

I used to go to Eastern Ammo on Eastern Avenue until they closed and another small mom and pop shop directly in Essex just before the Back River bridge.

The store I got the Makarov from was as I recall on the back end of the Middlesex shopping center, I think they're long gone now too. Used to Deal with I think it was called Walters' Gun Shop in Parkville a lot. And I got my Ruger MKII .22 pistol from a shop on Belair Rd before Frankford Ave. that also went away long ago. I don't know where any Dealers are anymore these days.

The shop in Parkville was Walter's Gun Chamber.  Small shop.  Great people and prices.  Clyde's in Halethorpe does gun repairs if you ever need them or need ammo for plinking.
