The Dulaney High School Key Club is always a vibrant presence in our community, as their members organize and volunteer for a wide variety of projects throughout the year. The Key Club is the world’s largest student-led high school service organization in the world and is sponsored by Kiwanis International.
Some of the volunteer opportunities this year for the Dulaney Key Club has included packing meals for the Baltimore Hunger Project, knitting and crocheting squares to be assembled into blankets and clothing for Warm Up America, and piloting a national peer-to-peer tutoring program through Schoolhouse. They even corralled the crowds at the Towson YMCA’s Turkey Trot 5k.
The Dulaney Key Club is under the direction of faculty advisors, Matt Lovett and Katie Owens, and has long been sponsored by community member Maury Wexler. This chapter is one of the strongest around.
At the recent 2023 Capital District Convention, the Dulaney chapter was named the Key Club of the Year for the entire Capital District. This district includes over 225 high school Key Clubs from Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia, representing over 12,000 students.
In addition to the top award, the Dulaney Key Club was also recognized with first-place honors for the Single Service Award, the Club Video Contest and the Year in Review Traditional Scrapbook Award. They also received honorable mention for the Digital Poster Contest and the Major Emphasis Award. Lovett was named the District Advisor of the Year.
Several students were also recognized for their contributions to the Key Club, including Erica Wang as Outstanding Club President, Takara Wilson as Outstanding Club Treasurer and Riya Mahale as Outstanding Lt Governor. Aaron Ren took first place in the Oratory Contest, Khizar Qazi was honored with the Above and Beyond Award and Michelle Wang earned the Capital Matching Scholarship. Congratulations to these dedicated student volunteers.
Sherwood Church hosts Earth (Sun)Day celebration
Sponsored by Beaverdam Green Team, Sherwood Episcopal Church held its inaugural Earth (Sun)Day celebration on April 23, attracting about 50 people on a beautiful spring afternoon.
The Sherwood Episcopal Youth Group handed out small red bud and Atlantic white cedar trees. Beaverdam Stream Captain, Steve Fauser, explained the best ways to plant, secure and protect the small trees from deer and other predators. He also gave away stakes and cylinder tree protectors.
Faith Lutheran’s Susan Meier talked about recycling and the Green Team’s goals and plans, with a focus on her recyclable vegetable bags, canvas grocery tote bags and compostable green trash bags. Suzie Merryman focused on the environment, native plants and gardens, including information about the trees that were given out. There were free hostas and black-eyed Susans as well.
The Beaverdam Green Team is a newly formed consortium of local churches and organizations including Faith Lutheran, Sherwood Episcopal, Bazil AME, Gunpowder Valley Conservation, Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake, Creation Care Ministry and Underwood Associates, centered on promoting and protecting the environment.
